Transforming Lives and Building Futures
We serve incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals with a holistic, Christ-centered reentry program that addresses housing, employment, mental health, and spiritual growth.
About Us
Project Nehemiah exists to break the cycle of incarceration through Christ-centered support, practical resources, and community partnerships.
Every year, thousands of individuals return home from prison—many without housing, job prospects, or support systems. In the D.C. metro area, nearly half face unemployment and a quarter face housing insecurity after release. Without guidance, the cycle continues: over two-thirds of returning citizens nationwide are re-arrested within three years.
Project Nehemiah exists to change that story. We believe that transformation begins long before release—and continues with consistent care, opportunity, and faith-driven community on the outside.

Our Program
At Project Nehemiah, we walk with individuals every step of the way—from life inside prison to long-term reintegration in the community. Our faith-based reentry model is built around three key phases:
-
6–12 months before release
Inside correctional facilities, we begin laying the foundation for a successful return to society. Each participant receives a personalized reentry plan tailored to their goals and needs.
We facilitate spiritual development through weekly worship services streamed into the facility, supported by in-person visits from church volunteers.
We also connect participants with resources—educational programs, job readiness tools, and partner organizations—that will be available to them upon release.
This phase is all about planting seeds of hope, vision, and accountability before they ever step outside the gates.
-
0–12 months post-release
The first year after release is the most vulnerable. In this phase, we focus on stabilizing daily life and preventing relapse.Participants are provided with essentials: safe housing, food, clothing, and transportation support.
Our team offers job training, employment assistance, and help navigating reentry barriers like IDs and background checks.
Mentorship is intensive in this season—daily check-ins early on, transitioning into weekly meetings that provide spiritual encouragement and emotional support.
Our goal is to ensure no one walks through this transition alone.
-
12–24 months post-release
Long-term healing takes time. In this final phase, we focus on sustained growth, community connection, and leadership. We continue to walk alongside each participant through discipleship, life coaching, and healthy habit formation.
Individuals are encouraged to serve in their communities, engage in church life, and rebuild family relationships.
We celebrate when our participants move from being supported to supporting others—becoming mentors, volunteers, and leaders in their own right.
This is where transformation takes root—and where freedom becomes a way of life.
